“Thousands of tactical nuclear weapons (TNWs) – many with yield capacity greater than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 – were deployed for battlefield use during the Cold War and still exist today. Also referred to as “battlefield” nuclear weapons, “mini-nukes”, “sub-strategic”, or “non-strategic” nuclear weapons, TNWs are regularly overlooked in arms control negotiations and have never been the subject of a formal international treaty.”
